Summer landscape

Painting the summer landscape.

It is June and I am enjoying working out in the landscape more than even before.

Walking the dog along the path which leads from Catus to Flory, and past the Baldy farm, I have become beautifully familiar with my valley. I’ve known this landscape for 25 years and I’ve painted it before, but at the moment I’m feeling a new sense of excitement. I’m beginning to see new compositions as I focus on the long shadows of morning and evening which break up shapes and add interesting rhythms.

I am also feeling freer to push vibrant richer colours into the shadow areas.

These two pastels were done in the early morning.
